JUNE 25, 2011

The running of the first Dollar Mountain 10K Trail run was a huge success. Runners came from as far away as Jackson, WY, Salt Lake City, UT and one couple even ran the race last minute after seeing the race flyer upon arriving from Minneapolis. We had a total of 60 runners start and all finished the 6.24 mile, 3400' elevation change technical course. The morning was perfect with bluebird skies and the single track was surrounded with fields and mountain slopes of Lupine in full bloom. We

did have some minor course goofs that will certainly be corrected for next year as well as some other areas needing improvement. For a first year race, I couldn't be happier with the results. I want to thank you all for taking on the course and hope you will spread the word of the quality running events being planned here in the Sun Valley area.

Thank You - Brad Mitchell, RD

RACE RESULTS ARE HERE

Euro style mountain run on Sun Valley Dollar Mountain. This course will test your ability to climb, descend and cruise the limited flats while seeing Dollar in a way that most are unaware of. The course is challenging and technical in places but entirely runable.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Runners will start and finish at The Community School "quad" (central lawn area), climb the Hidden Valley draw of Dollar to the saddle, descend to the backside to the Gem St. trail junction. From the junction, runners will head  south and start to climb and traverse the back side looping around to the top of the Elkhorn service road. Traversing the top of Elkhorn via the service road over to the top of Dollar, runners have to top out at the radio towers (a volunteer will be stationed there to confirm!), turn around and descend to the Old Bowl ridge singletrack. Careful, this descent is rocky and loose. At the base of the ridge (top of Half Dollar lift), runners will head south on the service road to the top of Quater Dollar lift and access the single track paralleling the golf course. This will lead runners to the sixteen switchbacks which they will ascend to the lower service road (connecting Dollar to Elkhorn). Participants head north on the service road to the single track that parallels Sepps Bowl and descend this single track to the service road and back to the top of Half Dollar lift. From Half Dollar lift, runners head back into Hidden Valley and descend the opening single track section back to The Community School quad.

IMPORTANT TRAIL INFORMATION - PLEASE READ!
This run would not be possible if Sun Valley Company was not willing to be flexible with the scheduling of their Trail Rides. If the weather cooperates, this could be their opening weekend and they are willing to allow this race to take place. The course takes place on Sun Valley Company property and I hope all participants respect that. There is the possibility runners could encounter a trail ride, RUNNERS ARE TO YIELD THE RIGHT OF WAY TO THE HORSES! This means, stopping and stepping off the trail. You may walk through the sage and go around the horses but if you are asked to stop by one of the Cowboys, please respect their decision and stop. It is for everyones safety. Runners may also encounter the Cowboys doing some trail maintenance (probably not but it is possible), please give a friendly "hello and thank you". If the Cowboys experience disrepectful runners or runners that fail to yield the right of way, this run will never happen again and access to the trails by the public will be threatened. Yes, you will hear this again at the pre-race brief.
